English Communication 1a Syllabus

Spring Term

 

1.       Course Type and Level: English Communication Ia

2.       Instructor: Dr. Brent Culligan

3.       Class Content: This course focuses on the acquisition and development of English through extensive practice in speaking and listening, and the development of vocabulary for academic purposes. Students will become familiar with and comfortable using English in the classroom through role-playing, listening to recorded stories, dictation, and discussions.

4.       Textbook Title: In house materials online at: http://www.culliganco.com/Keio/index.html

5.       Recommended Reference Books: An English to English dictionary, either electronic or print

6.       Estimate of Material Covered Per Class: One unit per week. Each unit consists of listening exercises, dictation exercises, vocabulary development, and discussion preparation.

7.       Instructor’s Expectations: Regular on-time attendance, preparation of weekly homework, active participation in class.

8.       Methods of Evaluation:

1.       Examinations – one mid-term test, one end-of-semester test (60%)

2.       In-class participation (20% - minus one point for each absence)

3.       Homework assignments (20%)
